The Wrong Side of History, or How We Got It Wrong

Abstract

It is now more than twenty years since I was an editor of Canadian Theatre Review (CTR), and fifty since I started on the journal as a student editorial assistant in its first years. One way or another, CTR was part of my life for five decades. For that reason, I find it hard to write about it. CTR wove many threads through my life, so that recalling my editorial experience becomes a kind of autotherapy. I have an ambivalent relationship to that history.

Author Biography

Alan Filewod, University of Guelph

Alan Filewod is Professor Emeritus of Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph, where he specialized in Canadian and political theatre history. He is the author of numerous publications on Canadian drama and the history of political theatre. He was Editor of Canadian Theatre Review from 1988 to 1995 and Co-Editor from 1996 to 2002. His most recent book is Reliving the Trenches: Memory Plays by Veterans of the Great War (2021, Wilfrid Laurier UP).
